Luxor
Luxor, originally known as Thebes, was the ancient capital of Egypt and is the starting or ending point for the famous Nile Cruises.

The Old and New Winter Palace Hotels still thrive and there is an excellent, small museum on the Nile promenade.
Sightseeing on the East Bank includes Karnak Temple and the Temple of Luxor. Along the main road leading to Karnak Temple are stone-sculpted sphinxes and at Luxor Temple you will find the massive statues of Ramses II.
The West Bank is a huge trove of treasures - the Valley of the Kings and the Queens, Queen Hapshetsut's Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon.
