Standing alone as a single destination or in conjunction with a visit to New Zealand, Australia deserves more than one visit. Take the time to discover the wonder of Australia and its people, wander the countryside, explore the red desert, swim in a waterhole, spend time among the vineyards, plunge into the surf. You will want your journey to never end.
The eastern third of the country is the most visited with Sydney as a starting point. Stay in the historic Rocks area of cobbled streets and interesting shops across Circular Quay from the famed Sydney Opera House and cruise the harbor, go to the top of the Sydney Tower, climb the Harbor Bridge or even do an aerial tour by seaplane to get a perfect view of this beautiful city.
Visit the nearby Hunter Valley wine country and the Blue Mountains by 4x4 vehicles. See kangaroos and koalas. Continue to the cultural city of Melbourne and take the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide with a couple of nights en route.
Adelaide is the stopping off point for the wine country of the Barossa Valley, the ferry or flight to Kangaroo Island, and The Ghan train north to Alice Springs and on to Darwin.
Take a camel to breakfast at Ayers Rock, learn about the constellations of the southern skies at the Sounds of Silence Dinner and walk around the nearby Olgas.
Fly to Cairns and drive north to Palm Cove and Port Douglas for some well-earned relaxation on the Great Barrier Reef. Cruise the reef for a day or two or stay on one of the fabulous resort islands. Hayman, Heron, and Lizard Islands boast some of the best resorts in the world with an underwater paradise second to none.
From Port Douglas visit Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation where the Daintree Rainforest comes right down to the shore to meet the Great Barrier Reef.
