Long before the invasion of the Spanish in the 16th century, the region that is now known as Peru was home to the mighty Inca Empire. The city of Cusco may not look like it now, but this metropolis was once the capital of the Inca Empire. You can travel back to that time period by visiting the nearby mountaintop site of Machu Picchu which can be reached either by train or on foot. Nazca Lines are worthy of a fly-by and a stop in Lake Titicaca for the rural tranquility and magnificent lakeside landscapes. For a close encounter with nature, Iquitos is a thriving city located deep in the rainforest which makes it the perfect launching spot for Amazonian adventures. For more urban activities, Peru’s capital Lima is awash with museums including the MATE which houses the only permanent Mario Testino exhibit in the world. No matter where you go during your visit, make sure to try the national dish ceviche which is cold fish marinated in citrus juices served with chilies and onions.
